how many amps to charge a battery?
First, you have to know how much batteries’ A.H. (Capacity rate)
The best way to charge a battery is a long time charging with low amps. Normally, both Float charge (stand-by use) 13.6-13.8V and Equal charge (cycle use) 14.2-14.9V, we charge at 10% of batteries’ A.H. (Capacity rate of battery)
Calculation
Amps charge = 10% x batteries’ A.H.
For example,
● Battery 65Ah : 0.1 x 65 = 6.5A So you should charge a battery 65Ah at 6.5 A
● Battery 100Ah : 0.1 x 100= 10A So you should charge a battery 100Ah at 10 A
How long charging?
From batteries’ datasheet, batteries typically run out with approximately 35% of AH remaining. Hence, we should charge an additional 65% for the battery to be full.
Calculation
additional Ah Charging = 65% x batteries’ A.H.
The number of hrs. = additional Ah Charging ÷ Amps charge
For example,
● Battery 65Ah
additional Ah Charging = 0.65 x 65 Ah = 42.25 Ah
The number of hrs. = 42.25Ah ÷ 6.5A = 6.5 hrs. ≈ 7 hrs.
= ฺBattery 65Ah, we should charge additional more 42.25Ah at 6.5A and take 7 hrs. long.
● Battery 100Ah
additional Ah Charging = 0.65 x 100 Ah = 65 Ah
The number of hrs. = 65Ah ÷ 10A = 6.5 hrs. ≈ 7 hrs.
= Battery 100Ah, we should charge additional more 65Ah at 10A and take 7 hrs. long.
Summary, an average number of hrs. to charge a battery is around 7 hrs.
